Every martial arts gym involves sweat, physical contact, and shared training surfaces. That setting makes it easy for bacteria to spread. Fungal infections and skin issues can grow quickly, too. Without proper hygiene habits, one person can affect the entire class.
These rules keep everyone safe. Follow them every time you train.
Shower Before and After Every Training Session
Personal cleanliness starts here. Showering before martial arts training cuts down on bacteria. This helps keep the mat cleaner. Showering after removes anything you picked up during class.
This is important, especially if you join martial arts classes nearby. In open sessions or drop-in classes, you train with different people every time. You can't control others. You can control yourself.
Wash All Your Gear After Every Class
Dirty martial arts gear is one of the fastest ways infections spread through a gym. A wet uniform or pair of gloves sitting in a closed bag overnight builds bacteria quickly.
Wash your karate gi or training uniform after every session. Always do this. The same rule applies to all martial arts equipment that makes contact with skin. Wraps, shin guards, gloves, and sparring pads all need regular washing. Airing gear out is not the same as cleaning it.
Trim Your Nails Before You Train
Short nails are a hygiene and safety requirement. Long nails scratch and cut training partners. They also collect dirt and bacteria under the surface.
Clip both fingernails and toenails before every class. Every good martial arts school expects this, and it only takes about two minutes.
Stay Home When You Are Sick or Infected
Do not come to martial arts classes with an open wound, rash, ringworm, or any active skin infection. These conditions spread rapidly through grappling and close contact training.
Most MMA classes and combat sports gyms have a zero tolerance policy on this. Respect them. Your training partners are trusting you to make the right call.
Disinfect the Mats Before and After Every Session
Hygiene is a shared gym responsibility. Mats at local martial arts gyms need cleaning. Use an approved antibacterial solution before and after every class. Allow mats to dry completely before anyone steps on them.
Flag any dirty or damaged mat immediately. Do not train on it until it has been cleaned.
Use Footwear Between the Mat and Other Areas
Always wear sandals or shoes when going to bathrooms, changing rooms, or any area outside the mat. Fungal infections can easily enter a training space. This often happens when people walk barefoot on these surfaces and then step onto the mat. A simple pair of flip flops solves this completely.
